Opioids are a class of drugs that includes the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids (such as fentanyl), and certain pain relievers that are legally available with a prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others. These drugs are chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain. Opioid pain relievers are generally safe when taken for a short period of time and as directed by a doctor, but because they produce euphoria in addition to pain relief, they are sometimes misused—that is, taken differently than prescribed, in higher doses, or without a prescription. Regular use, even when following a doctor's instructions, can lead to dependence, and if misused, opioid pain relievers can lead to overdose and death. Opioid overdose can be reversed with the drug naloxone if administered immediately. There are effective medications for treating opioid use disorder: methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone. These medications can help many people recover from opioid addiction, but they can also lead to dependence on opioids. Now, what about cannabis as a treatment for opioid addiction?

The first thing you need to know to see improvement in any addiction is the desire to get better and recover. If you have this will to fight the addiction, you've already won half the battle. However, it's important to understand that this requires commitment and a clear understanding of what you want to achieve. Medicinal cannabis has been proven to help patients with terminal illnesses, depression, mental health conditions, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and other conditions. Cannabis has helped and transformed the lives of many for the better, provided they are aware of the plant. Studies have shown that the average person simply replaces one addictive behavior with another and never truly recovers from the addiction; they merely transform it into something else, or in the worst cases, into another vice. This shouldn't discourage anyone seeking improvement, as addiction can become the driving force for a better quality of life. This can be achieved by transforming the addiction into exercise, and when seeking a "high," if properly guided, medicinal cannabis can be used as an alternative to the anxiety of being "high."
