April 20th (“420”) marks a very special day for the cannabis community worldwide. It is a day of celebration, but also of reflection. It is a time to commemorate and thank all the people who make up the industry and contribute to what it is, and also a day to remember the importance of this plant in our lives, as well as the battles that have been won and those that still need to be fought in its name.
In Puerto Rico, medical cannabis patients have much to be grateful for at 420. They have access to a wide variety of products and more affordable prices than in many places in the United States. It is a privilege to have access to this plant that can improve the quality of life for so many people.
However, amidst the celebration, it is crucial to remember that there are still challenges to face.
Decriminalization and depenalization are battles that remain urgent. It is also essential to advocate for fair wages and benefits for cannabis industry employees that adequately reflect their hard work and compliance with the law.
The number 420 is a reminder of our commitment to the cause, to the plant, and to our lifestyle. We must continue fighting for a future in Puerto Rico where cannabis is treated with the same dignity as any other medicine or, at the very least, in the case of recreational use, like alcohol and tobacco.
So as we enjoy the 420 festivities, let us celebrate, reflect, and strive to keep improving. Because the true spirit of 420 lies not only in the celebration itself, but in the ongoing commitment to building a more just and compassionate world for all.
