CONSUME SMOKE-FREE • CHEF JIMBO “Foods and Infusions”

My name is Jim, and I've been in the medical cannabis industry in Puerto Rico for almost three years, along with my other family, Cultivana. Before entering the industry, I worked for fourteen years in my other passion: the culinary arts. I went from line cook and first cook to sous chef and finally executive chef at several renowned fine dining restaurants on the island. Cannabis has helped me for many years with my back and a knee injury. I've always believed it's better to be illegally alive than legally dead. I fell in love with Indica for its effects, and from there, I started experimenting with my culinary skills. When I learned that medical cannabis was becoming legal, I told myself, "I'm going to use all my skills and my heart for this industry." And here we are: four professionals who have known each other for a lifetime, discussing various ideas, and forming, like Voltron, the first marketing and advertising agency called Cultivana. Cultivana then joined forces with the FLYTLABS family and Magical Butter to deliver a message to the industry and patients about the importance of vaporizing and how to create your own edibles at home.

Cannabis edibles are products infused with THC or CBD that you can eat or drink. Cannabis can be infused into any type of food, from sweets like cookies, lollipops, or brownies, to sauces, and hot and cold beverages. Many chefs use this method to create gourmet dishes in their kitchens. Most edibles are typically made using two infusion processes: butter and oil. Once you have this infusion, you can create various recipes. Other edibles can also be made using another extraction called tincture. Its concentration is higher, as you only need one or two drops of the tincture to quickly create edibles, and it's also easier to control the amount of THC in the edible. Edibles can also be seen as an alternative and delicious way to consume cannabis. Remember, before consuming cannabis, keep in mind that the effects can sometimes be unpredictable. This will depend on the individual's metabolism and condition. Unlike vaping, where THC enters the bloodstream through the lungs and reaches the brain in seconds, edibles deliver this molecule to the digestive system. Here, the body absorbs the THC during digestion, starting in the stomach and intestines, and then passing through the liver. In the liver, the nutrients are broken down, and the THC molecule is converted into the more potent 11-hydroxy-THC molecule. Therefore, the psychoactive effects are more intense and longer-lasting. The effects of edibles can begin to be felt within 30 to 90 minutes and can last from 4 to 12 hours.
