Hope Assembles will reunite the Avengers and Spider-Man with Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Han in a story set on Earth-616. NYCC coverage also reported that the story will count within Marvel continuity; its place in the Star Wars canon remains unclear.

Marvel and Star Wars have shared a publishing history for decades, but their fictional universes have remained separate. That boundary will begin to shift with Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles , billed as the first crossover between the Star Wars universe and the Marvel comics universe.

The project was announced in August. New pages were revealed at the recent New York Comic Con, and according to panel coverage, the story will be part of Marvel continuity. This raises a question: what impact will this adventure have on each universe? Reports place the story within Marvel, but the information consulted doesn't specify its relationship to the Star Wars continuity . (Cosmic Book News , Bleeding Cool)

The storyline will take the events of A New Hope to Earth-616 after a reality-altering spell. The Avengers, Spider-Man, and other Marvel heroes will encounter Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. On another front, Doctor Doom will join forces with Darth Vader and the Galactic Empire. Kevin Smith is writing the series, and David Marquez is handling the art. The first issue is slated for release in January 2027, during the 50th anniversary year of A New Hope .

The connection between the brands has a long history. Marvel published the first Star Wars comic in 1977 and resumed publishing the saga in 2015. This new series takes that editorial relationship to another level: the official crossover of both universes.

It also happens within the same corporate structure. Disney announced the acquisition of Marvel in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012. Even so, sharing a company hadn't produced this narrative crossover. CB Cebulski, then editor-in-chief of Marvel, explained that the idea had been considered since Marvel regained the Star Wars license , and that the anniversary and Lucasfilm's approval allowed them to move forward. Therein lies one of the most interesting aspects of Hope Assembles : the crossover brings to the forefront a boundary that both franchises maintained for decades. The character combinations may appeal to fans; the editorial dimension lies in how each universe receives the other and what consequences it chooses to retain.

The announcement refers to a comic book miniseries. Information released so far does not include a film or television series. Nor has it been specified whether this encounter will have consequences for the Star Wars continuity . For now, Marvel has opened the door to Earth-616. It remains to be seen whether that door also connects to the canon of a galaxy far, far away.
