We're nearing the end of 2025, a time when many people make resolutions. We think about improving our health, losing weight, exercising, but we often forget about our sexuality as part of our overall well-being.
Self-esteem is the appreciation or regard one has for oneself. Self-esteem and sexuality are closely interrelated. Sexual self-esteem is the confidence one has in one's sexual identity, attractiveness, and ability to participate in satisfying sexual experiences. High sexual self-esteem is built and has four important components:
• Body image : Perceiving your own body in a positive way, including your attractiveness and sexuality.
• Confidence : Your belief in the ability to have satisfying sexual experiences by communicating needs and desires.
• Comfort : Feeling good physically and emotionally during sexual encounters.
• General self-esteem : Recognizing your high value as a person, without needing validation from a partner.
Sexual self-esteem influences various aspects of life, such as partner selection, decisions about having sex, and how freely you express yourself during sex. Healthy sexual self-esteem can lead to deeper and more satisfying intimate connections. There are several ways we can work to maintain positive sexual self-esteem:
• Challenge negative thoughts : Actively work to reframe negative self-talk about your body and sexual abilities.
• Embrace body positivity : Focus on self-love and defining your own beauty standards. Participate in self-care activities, appreciate your body's strengths, and avoid comparing yourself to others or unrealistic portrayals in the media.
• Communicate openly : Practice open and honest communication with your partner about your desires, boundaries, and needs.
• Focus on pleasure, not performance : Change your approach to how you look or act during sex. Stay present in the experience of giving and receiving pleasure.
• Explore your sexuality : Take the time to understand your own sexual desires and what brings you pleasure, without judging yourself or others.
Cultivating sexual self-esteem is crucial for overall well-being and extends far beyond the bedroom, shaping how people navigate the world and their personal connections.
I wish that in this coming year you embrace your whole and authentic self, that you see and appreciate your body not through the harsh lens of societal expectations, but with the kind and loving eyes you deserve. May you find the confidence to own your desires, speak your truth without hesitation, and set boundaries that honor your well-being. Above all, I wish that you feel empowered, worthy, and beautiful in your own skin, experiencing the fullness of pleasure, connection, and joy in your intimate life and beyond.
